Frequently Asked Questions About Amber Teething Necklaces

Parents who are facing the prospect of the difficult teething phase with their little one may be considering purchasing an amber necklace. This is a holistic remedy that naturally soothes an uncomfortable baby without any artificial medication. However, it is understandable that you may have a few questions if you have not heard of this therapeutic product before.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions around amber teething necklaces.

How do amber teething necklaces work?

Baltic amber contains a substance called succinic acid, which has natural painkilling properties. When the necklace is worn against the baby’s skin, the beads are gently heated and the succinic acid is released in small quantities.

This natural analgesic is absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream, providing a  soothing effect on the baby’s sore and inflamed gums.

What is raw Baltic amber?

Raw Baltic amber is a fossilised tree resin that is obtained from the Baltic regions of northern Europe. It has formed over millions of years from the decaying organic matter of ancient forests. In fact, in some translucent pieces of amber it may be possible to see ancient particles of insect and plant matter.

The amber from this reserve in northern Europe has a particularly high concentration of succinic acid, from between three to nine percent. Throughout the centuries it has traditionally been used as a healing remedy as it is considered to have antibacterial and antioxidant properties as well as act as a painkiller.

Are amber necklaces safe?

When used correctly, the teething necklaces are safe. The infant should always be supervised when wearing the necklace and never laid down to sleep when wearing it. Never allow the infant to chew the beads and ensure that all the beads are intact and securely attached before putting the necklace on your baby.

Make sure that you choose the correct size of necklace (usually 12.5 inches) for your little one and that the clasp is safe and secure. Remove the necklace every time you leave them unsupervised and never encourage them to play with the jewellery as a toy or use it for ornamental purposes only.

How long do the necklaces take to work?

The therapeutic effects of the necklace can occur within a few hours of applying the beads to the skin. However, each response is individual, and it may take up to a week for the true effects to be felt. Therefore you should persist even if you do not see immediate results.

It’s important to note that the jewellery should be used as part of a holistic approach, and should not be regarded as a guaranteed cure. If your baby is suffering from particular distress you should seek medical advice or explore other natural teething remedies such as gum massages and cold cloths applied to the gums.

Can the amber cause allergic reactions?

Product allergies are extremely rare and it is unlikely that your baby will have an adverse reaction. However, observe your baby carefully the first time they wear the product and if you do suspect an adverse reaction, discontinue use.
